                   St. John the Divine, Men's Group.                    

   Established: MCMLVI.         Motto: Dum spiramus vivamus.

In 1956 the Rev. R. Stanton, vicar of St. John's, suggested that the church men form an association;  since the church ladies had formed  a 'Young Wives',   (which became the  Women's  Fellowship).    

The  first official meeting of the Men's  Group was held  in

        March  1956,   at   2,  Meadfoot   Road;  

when  a  committee  consisting  of  Harry  Eales (Chairman),

Frank  Webb  (Vice-Chairman),  John  Dale   (Treasurer)   

and   Charles Littlewood  (Secretary),  was elected.

Meetings were informal and generally involved discussions of an ecumenical nature.

However,  with the arrival of  the next  vicar,   Rev. K. J. Cooke;  meetings  became more social occasions,  with  quiz and games nights,  guest speakers,  slide shows,  visits  to places of  interest,  evenings with other church groups;  and rambles to ... local taverns.

        John Lowe, the headmaster of Willenhall Wood school and a friend of the Men's  Group  introduced them to day outings into the countryside;  the first one being to Wyre Forest in 1969.  Weekend trips to Corris, Wales; followed in 1971.

The Men's Group activities  still  consist of  a varied  programme  of both indoor  and outdoor   events.     At   the  time  of  writing,  the  average  age  of   the   Group   is  about 77;  but,  according  to  their   motto  "While  we  breathe,  let  us  live",  their  enthusiasm remains  undiminished.
